We Klang Valley-ites love our Japanese food and steamboat buffets. Just go to any shopping center or commercial food hub, and chances are more than 40% of the restos offer either Jap food (sushi, ramen, udon, etc) or some kind of steamboat. Tex-Mex food, on the other hand, is much harder to find beyond Chilli’s, and they’re usually expensive. A shame, because I really like my tacos!
S and I were hunting for food near Sunway University College. Just next to the uni is an odd mix of industrial/commercial lots – mostly car repair shops and factories interspersed with chic cafes to cater to the student population. There, we found Thyme Out! Punny name aside, the place dishes out cheap but tasty Mexican food like tacos, nachos, burritos and the like. The smoking area outside has a colourful wall with Mexican folk art inspired murals.
Cosy interior, decorated with patterned tiles, clean and polished wooden tabletops, and modern, sleek-looking chairs.
They started off as a food truck, moved to a hawker center, before finally opening their first outlet in SS15 Subang. The one we visited is actually their second shop 🙂
I got the Finding Dory (RM18) – three fish tacos served with tartare sauce. Juicy fried fish fillets sat on a bed of pink, marinated cabbage, wrapped in a soft, open-shell tacos. Fillets were a bit small in size, but they more than made up for it with flavour. Bursting with juices, the fried stuff and the crunchy cabbage gave a nice contrast to the soft wheat tacos. 
S had Chicken tacos (minimum order 2). One of the only way to make me eat my greens is by sandwiching them in bread with some meat. The tacos had Chicken meat, tomato cubes, cabbage, salsa and just the slightest hint of sour cream . Chicken was a bit dry but overall still good. Felt healthy too 😛
Tacos aside, they serve stuff like burritos (lamb, chicken, beef), nachos, Chimichangas (I will be back to try these!), Buffalo Wings, fries/chicken tenders and other snacks, and desserts. Price-wise, reasonable for the setting. Portions are moderate. But if you’re looking for a relatively affordable alternative to Chilli’s, give Thyme Out a try 😉
